Manchester United could make a move for Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo if Harry Maguire leaves Old Trafford
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are considering the possibility of signing Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo as a potential replacement for Harry Maguire in the event that the current skipper departs from the club during the summer transfer window.
During United’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday, their star defender was met with boos from the supporters. The incident occurred when Maguire lost possession, leading to Athletic’s opening goal. He attempted to drive forward from defence but misplaced the pass, leaving a gap for Nico Williams to capitalise on.
The United centre-back was part of a mostly second-string XI in the match, as the Red Devils’ first-choice team played against Lens at Old Trafford a day earlier. This situation highlights the significant drop in the English star’s status within the team at Old Trafford.
Manager Erik ten Hag has shown a preference for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his centre-back pairing. He has even favoured Victor Lindelof and left-back Luke Shaw over Maguire.
Additionally, the 30-year-old was stripped of the captaincy by his manager during the summer transfer window. This has led to heavy speculation about his potential departure, with West Ham showing serious interest in signing him.
However, his substantial salary, which has increased due to United qualifying for the Champions League, may present a significant obstacle for any potential suitors looking to sign him.
In the event of the former Leicester City star’s potential departure, Man United are already preparing for his exit and have set their sights on young Nice centre-back Todibo as a possible replacement.
Romano on his Youtube channel said:
“Manchester United had contacts to be informed on the conditions of Jean Clair Todibo deal. No bid or talks at this stage as the option could only be activated if Harry Maguire leaves.”
The club’s hierarchy has expressed interest in the player and has requested information on the conditions of a potential deal. However, their pursuit of the French player will depend on Maguire securing a new club. Ten Hag would need a squad of four centre-backs, and Maguire’s departure would leave the team with limited options in that position.
Todibo, who previously spent two years at Barcelona, has now found stability at Nice, where he signed a permanent deal in 2021. The 23-year-old has impressed with his performances, featuring in 46 matches across all competitions for the Ligue 1 club.
Nice, which is owned by potential United suitor Sir Jim Ratcliffe, values Todibo at around €30m. However, discussions between both clubs have not progressed significantly at this point, as any move is dependent on Maguire’s future at the club. If the English star stays, the pursuit of Todibo may be put on hold.
Despite his impressive performances, Nice finished in ninth place, which means they will not be participating in European competitions in the upcoming season. This lack of European football could potentially impact the 23-year-old’s decision-making regarding his future.
With four years remaining on his current contract, the French club holds a strong position in any potential transfer negotiations for Todibo.
The talented defender, standing at 6ft 2in tall, possesses an array of impressive skills. He is quick, excels at playing out from the back, displays proficiency in aerial duels, and contributes well defensively.

Considering his talent and the attributes he brings to the table, Todibo could prove to be a valuable addition to United if they successfully secure his signature during this transfer window.
However, the French club’s strong negotiating position could make things difficult for the Red Devils. In any case, they may still use the funds collected by selling Maguire to make a move.
Until now, there have been no official updates from the player’s side regarding his future. It is highly unlikely that he will look for an exit before the new season starts next week.
