Manchester United are set to secure Sofyan Amrabat after holding talks with Fiorentina representatives
According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla (h/t the Sun), Manchester United are moving closer to finalising a £30 million transfer for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
Over the past year, the 26-year-old has gained prominence both at club and international levels. He played a crucial role in Morocco’s impressive journey to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar.
Similarly, for Fiorentina during the 2022-23 season, Amrabat was a vital player, helping the team reach the finals of the Europa Conference League and the Coppa Italia.
His parent club secured a spot in the Europa Conference League by finishing in eighth place in Serie A, benefiting from Juventus’ exclusion from European competitions.
Since joining Fiorentina from Hellas Verona in 2020, he has scored one goal and assisted one in a total of 107 games. Before his time at Fiorentina, he played for clubs like Feyenoord, Utrecht, and Club Brugge.
However, it appears that the Serie A outfit will have to face the 2023-24 season without Amrabat as their midfield anchor. According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Amrabat is set to join Man United soon.
United and Fiorentina have conducted secret talks through intermediaries, and a deal to sign the talented African star is close to being finalised.
Amrabat has one more year remaining in his current contract, with an option for an extension until 2025. United might need to pay a decent sum to secure his services.
The Red Devils seem willing to meet Fiorentina’s asking price, and they are also facing competition from Al-Ahli for the midfielder’s signature.
United have already made significant signings this summer, acquiring Mason Mount and Andre Onana. As a result, the club may need to offload a few midfielders before they can sign the defensive midfielder.
As rumours surrounding his future continue to grow, Amrabat has been excluded from the Fiorentina squad for their upcoming matches against Newcastle United and Nice this weekend.
The Moroccan maestro seems to be the perfect fit for United, and he is said to be eager to join the club despite rejecting a more lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.
He has expressed his desire to leave Fiorentina, putting the Italian club in a difficult position between holding out for a high transfer fee or allowing him to move on quickly.
Amrabat‘s preference for United gives the Red Devils an advantage, and any delay in the deal could potentially lead to a cheaper transfer fee for the player.
The African honcho has emerged as one of the top-holding midfielders in Serie A, showcasing excellent ball control and the ability to disrupt play with well-timed challenges.
While he may not possess the tough-tackling style of someone like Casemiro, he offers quality competition in the midfield.
