Erik ten Hag planning with Harry Maguire in Manchester United squad next season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is planning with England international Harry Maguire in his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of the Dutch manager in the Red Devils’ dugout. As a result, the defender has been linked with a move away from the club this summer. The Old Trafford side have already rejected an offer for the centre-back from West Ham United, as per The Athletic (Subscription Required).

Speaking via Football Daily on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News), Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth believes that Ten Hag intends to keep Maguire at Man United for the 2023/24 term.

“I think Erik ten Hag is planning for Harry Maguire to be in the Manchester United squad next season.”

In the summer of 2019, the Red Devils signed the English national from Leicester City. Prior to his stint with the Foxes, the defender played for the likes of Sheffield United and Hull City.

Maguire started off brightly at the Old Trafford side. The centre-back was even handed the captain’s armband a few months into his stint at the Manchester-based club.

Unfortunately, the last few seasons have not been fruitful for the English national. After looking shaky in defence for a considerable period, the Dutch manager decided to drop the defender from the starting lineup.

Subsequently, in the previous campaign, Maguire lost his influence in the team and became a bit-part player. The English national started just eight games in the Premier League for us.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez seem to be Ten Hag’s preferred choices in the backline. Victor Lindelof was also chosen ahead of the other options in the team to serve as backup.

But despite Maguire’s struggles at Man United, he has still had a place in the Three Lions’ setup and has put in some impressive performances for Gareth Southgate’s team. While the English national has not convinced of getting back his starting spot, the centre-back is more than capable of providing depth to our defence.
