Manchester United ready to reach compromise on defender’s £40m price tag

Mikael Silvestre believes Manchester United did the right thing in stripping Harry Maguire of the club captaincy.

Manchester United are ready to reduce their asking fee in order to sell Harry Maguire

According to Sky Sports (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are willing to let Harry Maguire leave the club on a cut-price deal amid interest from West Ham United.

West Ham saw their opening offer of £20m being rejected by United who deemed Maguire’s valuation to be close to £40m.

However, the club is willing to lower the asking price in order to facilitate a move for the player, who has been stripped of his captaincy and fallen down the pecking order. That is, if they believe a suitor makes a serious offer in the region of the valuation they have placed on the centre-back.

After the signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta BC, United would be keen to add more quality profiles to the squad but need to raise funds through player sales for that to be made possible.

Hence, the club are looking to cut down on their valuation and allow Maguire to leave if the club put in a bid of a reasonable amount which would be lower than what was initially being asked.

It looks like United are keen to take Maguire off the wage bill which would save the clubs millions in the coming future but there is doubt whether the England International wants to leave the club.

He is on a heavy payroll and could have to cut off his wages in order to facilitate a move and that too for a team on a lower level than Manchester United.

It seems that the former club captain wants to fight for his place at the club and show the reason why United paid such a huge fee to acquire him from Leicester City. If not that, he would at least want to play for a European giant.

With the recent speculations, it does not feel like Maguire is in Erik Ten Hag’s plans moving forward but just like Aaron Wan-Bissaka did last summer, he can surprise many if he improves his game.

It remains to be seen how the saga surrounding Maguire will end but for now, it does seem like he is headed out from Old Trafford.
