Bayern Munich eyeing a stunning move for former Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea this summer
According to the Times (h/t the Metro), former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is being considered for a remarkable move to Bayern Munich this summer.
The Spanish shot-stopper is currently a free agent after concluding his 12-year stint with the Red Devils earlier this month.
Erik ten Hag decided not to renew De Gea’s contract, following lengthy negotiations. The veteran star was quickly replaced by Inter Milan star Andre Onana.
Inter Milan are close to securing Bayern’s Yann Sommer as a replacement for Onana. Hence, there is a void to be filled in the German giant’s goalkeeping department.
Bayern Munich have now inquired about De Gea’s interest in potentially moving to the Bundesliga. Manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to begin the new season with Manuel Neuer as the first-choice goalkeeper.
However, Dea could still be a valuable addition to the team, offering quality depth and experience to the reigning champions, and the best part is that he would come at no cost.
The former United keeper has turned down an approach from Inter, as his preference is to make a return to La Liga.
Nevertheless, the opportunity to compete for title glory with the Bavarian giants might tempt him if he receives assurances of getting significant playing time.
Bayern are fully capable of meeting De Gea’s salary requirements, but the main uncertainty lies in whether the player would be enticed to make the move to Germany.
There is a possibility that the 32-year-old might have to accept a backup role at Munich once Neuer returns to full fitness.
However, it’s worth considering that Neuer is already 37 years old, and it may not be too far in the future when the club starts considering a replacement for their current number-one goalkeeper.
If De Gea performs well and leaves a positive impact, there is a genuine chance that the Bundesliga champions might view him as a potential short-term replacement for Neuer.
The decision ultimately rests on whether the Spaniard is willing to take on this challenge or if he prefers to join another club where he can be assured of a starting role throughout.
