Andre Onana reveals why he chose the number 24 at Manchester United
New Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana reveals the reason behind his choosing the number 24 instead of the traditional number one.
The Cameroon international says that 24 is his birthday and he has done a lot with that number at the back so far in his career. He was born on 2 April 1996 (2/4/1996).
Let’s hope that the former Inter Milan and Ajax stopper continues the good work at Old Trafford and be that solid presence between the posts.
Here’s what Onana exactly said when asked about choosing the number 24 (h/t Manchester United website):
“I just like that number. It’s my birthday. My date of birth. For me it’s great, it’s beautiful. I like this shirt because [in] this shirt, this number we have done a lot and I hope it will continue.”
A few days ago, United completed a £47.2m deal to sign Onana from Inter. He has joined the squad to prepare for the season ahead in the USA.
With David de Gea gone this summer, the Cameroonian would be expected to take the first-choice goalkeeping position in the team.
United boss Erik ten Hag knows the player very well from their time together at Ajax. For that reason, there is hope that the integration process would be rather straightforward.
Having signed Onana, United have made sure to cover up an important position in the team. A solid goalkeeper who understands the playing style well is such an asset not just for the back line, but also for the whole team.
Now, the focus should shift towards adding a striker as soon as possible. Talks are ongoing to bring Rasmus Hojlund. While the Danish forward is young, he has the talent to take that number nine position with aplomb here.
