Wayne Rooney thinks it would be best for Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney suggests Harry Maguire to leave the club as it would be right for him.
A few days ago, Maguire revealed through a social media post that he has been relieved of the captaincy duty.
It was understandable given that the England international has been a fringe player since Erik ten Hag took charge of the team last summer.
Here’s what Rooney said about Maguire, his position at United and the future (h/t BBC):
“To have the armband taken off you, how does he move forward with the club?
“That shows the manager really doesn’t believe in him. It leaves Harry in a position where he has to think on what he does moving forward. The manager has shown he is not part of the plans.
“I’m sure Harry will want to go and play – for himself, for his England career – to put himself in the best position to be as successful as he can.”
West Ham United have recently shown interest in signing the defender. But, United rejected the move as the Hammers wanted to sign him on loan.
Given that he is pretty much a bench-warmer in the current regime, it makes no sense to let him go on loan. The ideal scenario would be a club offering a transfer fee to sign him.
As Rooney said, it is important for Maguire’s England career that he continues to play games at the club level. It is understood that he the latter won’t get that at Old Trafford.
With the Euros coming next year and England having centre-backs coming up the ranks to challenge Maguire’s position in the team, the latter cannot just play around with his future this summer.
He needs to be stern about it and force a move away from the club. Although not suited to the style of play here, the 30-year-old is still a good defender who would do well in a deep-defending side.

Let’s hope Maguire sorts his future out as soon as possible. He should listen to Rooney and think about playing time rather than sitting on the bench with the United badge on the shirt.
