SL Benfica reject Alex Telles plus cash offer from Manchester United for Goncalo Ramos
Manchester United offered Alex Telles plus cash to SL Benfica for Goncalo Ramos, but it was rejected by the Primeira Liga outfit, according to CaughtOffside (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are looking to reinforce their attack in the ongoing transfer window with the addition of a striker. To that end, Erik ten Hag is looking at alternative options to Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.
As a result, United proposed a swap deal with the Lisbon-based club for their number nine. As things stand, the Brazilian full-back is expected to leave the Old Trafford side this summer. Thus, the Red Devils looked to include the 30-year-old to help in their pursuit of the 22-year-old Portuguese.
Ramos broke onto the scene last season and showcased his prolificity for Benfica. The Portugal international also caught a lot of people’s attention after scoring a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup round of 16 tie against Switzerland.
At United, Ten Hag does not have a luxury of options at his disposal up front. The gaffer had to rely on Marcus Rashford to find the back of the net on a consistent basis in the previous campaign, with Anthony Martial on the sidelines a lot.
Coming to Telles, he seems surplus to requirements at the Old Trafford side. The Brazil international spent last season on loan at Sevilla. However, the 30-year-old is down in the pecking order at the Manchester-based club.
The Red Devils counted on Luke Shaw to play at left-back for most of the previous campaign. We also signed Tyrell Malacia last summer. The Holland international put in a decent shift as the backup to the former Southampton star.
Therefore, it makes sense to include a player like Telles to decrease Ramos’ price. However, the Brazilian previously played for Benfica’s bitter rivals FC Porto. It would be understandable if the full-back had doubts about joining the Eagles.

Hopefully, the Red Devils will be able to come to a consensus with the Primeira Liga outfit to sign the Portuguese striker with or without the involvement of a player swap.
