Inter Milan boss understands Andre Onana could leave amidst Manchester United links
Simone Inzaghi, the manager of Inter Milan, understands that the Italian outfit may be forced to part ways with Andre Onana amidst links to Manchester United.
The Cameroonian has been identified by the Red Devils as their top target to be the next number one. David de Gea parted ways with the Old Trafford side recently after his contract expired. To that end, there is optimism at the club about acquiring the services of the 27-year-old soon.
Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Inzaghi is adamant that Onana is an Inter player for now. However, the Italian manager realises that they may not be able to retain him for the upcoming campaign.
“He’s an Inter player, tomorrow [Thursday] he’ll be among the players called up for pre-season. We know the transfer window is unpredictable and that all Italian clubs have to sell before they can buy.
“We know there’s this risk [that he leaves] but at the same time, I’m calm about it all because the club and the owners have reassured me that this year we’ll have a competitive Inter.”
De Gea was relied upon by Erik ten Hag for most of last season. The Spaniard was the only quality shot-stopper at the gaffer’s disposal, with the likes of Tom Heaton and Jack Butland on the bench.
While the 32-year-old put in some impressive performances, he also made some costly errors. The former Atletico Madrid star is not the best with the ball at his feet. As a result, the veteran goalkeeper looked uncomfortable playing under the Dutch manager.
Now, Man United are looking for a shot-stopper who is confident in possession. To that end, Onana is considered one of the best when it comes to his distribution.
The Cameroonian showcased his abilities against Manchester City in the Champions League final. Despite losing 1-0, the shot-stopper caught a lot of people’s attention as Inter were able to counter the Sky Blues’ high press.
Heaton started in goal for us in our first pre-season friendly against Leeds United. Matej Kovar also featured in the 2-0 win over the Peacocks. Dean Henderson is on the sidelines for now.
