Brighton are eyeing a summer deal for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay
According to the Daily Mail (h/t the Sun Live), Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion have identified Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay as a potential transfer target in the ongoing summer window.
The Scottish midfielder’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain as manager Erik ten Hag aims to sell several players to generate funds for new signings. McTominay could be one of the players let go if an appropriate offer is presented to the club.
Newcastle and West Ham have also expressed interest in the Scottish international, who is a product of the Man United academy.
The Red Devils would be happy to sell the player if a decent offer comes through. And now, Brighton, who will be participating in the Europa League, have identified McTominay as a potential replacement for Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo is currently in negotiations with Chelsea for a potential move to Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old has been one of Albion’s standout performers, contributing to their highest-ever Premier League finish and securing Europa League qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
The Ecuadorian’s impressive performances have attracted interest from top clubs. However, it appears that a move to West London is the most likely outcome, as personal terms have reportedly been agreed upon.
Following the departure of Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, Brighton are actively seeking some fresh signings in the midfield department. McTominay has emerged as a potential candidate to fill the void left by Caicedo. However, the Seagulls would need to splash £50 million to sign the United midfielder.
The Scottish international has been playing for United since joining their youth academy at the age of six in 2002.
Throughout his career, McTominay has made 209 appearances for the club, finding the back of the net on 19 occasions. Hence, the Seagulls are considering the midfielder as they look to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
McTominay, standing at 6 ft. 4, had witnessed reduced playing time last season due to the arrival of Casemiro from Real Madrid. The arrival of Marcel Sabitzer on loan further pushed him down the pecking order at the club.
As a result, United manager Ten Hag is content with letting the 26-year-old depart from Old Trafford during this summer’s transfer window. The club is expected to capitalise on his sale before his contract expires in June 2025.
In the event of McTominay’s sale, the Dutch boss may turn to Sofyan Amrabat as a potential replacement. Ten Hag and Amrabat previously worked together during their time at FC Utrecht in 2007. The Red Devils could also use McTominay in a swap deal for Caicedo.
The Red Devils will be able to find several suitors for the Scottish midfielder, but they have to decide whether to use that sum to sign a new player.
Due to limited transfer funds, they could face issues signing another defensive midfielder. The club needs a new striker, and that is a position that needs to be strengthened with the utmost priority.

It would be no surprise to see United use that sum to sign a prolific goal-scorer rather than find a replacement for the Scottish star. Either way, losing both Fred and McTominay may change the club’s fortunes and in those circumstances, they would need to sign a defensive midfielder as a backup to Casemiro.
Things have started to heat up in the transfer window, and every penny received through player sales will be helpful for the club to grow in the ongoing transfer window.
