Brighton & Hove Albion shot-stopper Robert Sanchez on Manchester United radar
Manchester United have added Brighton & Hove Albion star Robert Sanchez to their list of potential next goalkeepers, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Metro).
The Spain international has popped up on the Red Devils’ radar as a cheaper alternative to Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana. The Cameroonian is the Old Trafford side’s leading target to replace David de Gea.
However, the Nerazzurri want £40–£50 million for the 27-year-old. On the other hand, the Seagulls’ 25-year-old could be available for as little as £30 million in the ongoing transfer window.
Sanchez made his way through the youth ranks at Brighton. After a few loan spells away from the East Sussex-based club, the Spaniard established himself in the first-team setup in the 2020/21 season.
Subsequently, the shot-stopper became the number one at the Amex Stadium side. However, in the previous campaign, the 25-year-old lost his place in the Seagulls’ team.
Roberto De Zerbi preferred Jason Steele in between the sticks towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign. In the ongoing transfer window, they have also signed promising goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht.
At United, David de Gea was trusted by Erik ten Hag last season. However, the 32-year-old’s contract with the Red Devils expired at the end of last month. But the former Atletico Madrid star signing a new deal at the club is not ruled out.
Still, at the moment, Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton are the two established shot-stoppers on the Old Trafford side’s books. Unfortunately, the two have not shown enough over the years to convince of being reliable starters.
