Manchester United are reluctant to let Tom Heaton go amid uncertainty in the goalkeeper situation
According to The Telegraph (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has blocked the exit of Tom Heaton amid uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping situation at the club.
David De Gea was expected to sign a new contract on reduced terms and that was the general feeling when the players left on holiday. However, it seems like the club and Erik Ten Hag has had a change of mind and are now looking at other possible targets to be the club’s number one for the upcoming season.
Ten Hag has not been convinced with De Gea, despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove last season. The Dutchman is partial to getting a new shot-stopper who can kickstart attacks from the back.
Inter Milan’s Andre Onana has suddenly become a primary target. Ten Hag already managed the player before at Ajax Amsterdam and is well aware of his strengths. More so, Inter Milan’s financial situation could force them to sell their star man.
Therefore, it seems like there will be a big reshuffle in the goalkeeping department before the start of next season and Heaton, who is generating interest from Luton Town, would be asked to stay at the club as a potential no.2.
Heaton has been a good servant to the club and performed well whenever called upon last season. Hence, keeping him as the backup goalkeeper would not be the worse decision in the world.
Although he is 37 years, Heaton has shown the levels to still play at the highest level. The fact that Ten Hag sees him capable enough of being the no.2 keeper for the club is enough to believe in the player’s ability.

At the same time, the future of Dean Henderson at the club is also looking bleak with the player expected to move to Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal. Whether Heaton stays or goes, he is far from being our first or second-choice goalkeeper. Hopefully, Ten Hag and co have something up their sleeves to get us out of this mess.
