Aston Villa expect Manchester United to make Emiliano Martinez offer
Premier League rivals Aston Villa are ‘bracing themselves’ for an approach from Manchester United for Emiliano Martinez, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils will look to sign a new number one goalkeeper in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, the Argentina international has popped up on the Old Trafford side’s radar.
As things stand, there is uncertainty around the future of David de Gea at United. The Spaniard’s current contract with the Manchester-based club is set to expire in the coming days.
Martinez is considered one of the best shot-stoppers in the world. The 30-year-old has grown from strength to strength since his move to the Villans from Arsenal in the summer of 2020.
The Argentine has only recently established himself on the world stage. During his long stint at the Gunners, the goalkeeper was hardly able to make an impact.
However, Martinez is now a World Cup winner. The 30-year-old was instrumental for Argentina as they lifted the prestigious trophy in Qatar. During the tournament, he made some brilliant saves and also came out on top in two penalty shootouts.
De Gea has been United’s first choice for over a decade now. The 32-year-old has been an admirable servant to the Old Trafford side. Unfortunately, the former Atletico Madrid star has not been at his best for some time now.
Under Erik ten Hag, while the Spaniard has made some important saves, he has looked uncomfortable with the style of play. As backups, we have Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop in our ranks as things stand.

Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see De Gea leave this summer. However, whether Martinez is the right man to replace the veteran goalkeeper remains to be seen.
