West Ham United put off by Manchester United defender Harry Maguire salary
Premier League rivals West Ham United could be put off by the salary demands of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire this summer, according to The Telegraph (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Hammers are interested in getting a hold of the England international, who is set to be put up for sale in the ongoing transfer window. However, with the centre-back’s wages likely being too much, negotiations may hit a dead end.
David Moyes admires the Red Devils’ captain. The Irons also have Scott McTominay on their radar. But it remains to be seen whether the London Stadium side will make a move for either of them.
Man United signed Maguire in the summer of 2019. After impressing at Leicester City and with the England national side, the 30-year-old was expected to be a quality addition to our defence.
Unfortunately, after a couple of decent seasons, the defender’s performances began to deteriorate for the Old Trafford side. Over the last two campaigns, the centre-back has been error-prone and has looked short of confidence.
Yet, Maguire has managed to be consistent for the Three Lions. Gareth Southgate still has faith in the former Leicester star. However, a lack of regular game time at the Red Devils evidently has the potential to scupper the defender’s international career.
At Man United, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were Erik ten Hag’s preferred options at the back last season. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw also played ahead of our captain on occasions in central defence.
West Ham had a mixed 2022/23 campaign. The Hammers were fighting relegation for the most part. However, in the end, they survived and also got to lift the UEFA Europa Conference League.
