Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana leading candidate to replace David de Gea at Manchester United
Manchester United have identified Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana as the ‘top target’ to replace David de Gea, according to talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News).
As things stand, the Spaniard’s current contract with the Red Devils is set to expire in the coming days. To that end, the Old Trafford side are looking at options in the market to replace the 32-year-old.
While United had offered the former Atletico Madrid star a new deal with a significantly lower salary, the Red Devils now have doubts regarding signing off on the fresh terms.
As a result, the Old Trafford side evidently need a new number one if De Gea ends up leaving. Inter’s Cameroonian goalkeeper is the Manchester-based club’s preferred choice to be the new number one.
Onana initially started at Ajax Amsterdam. During his stint at the Eredivisie club, the 27-year-old developed and thrived under Erik ten Hag.
Last summer, the shot-stopper left De Godenzonen and joined the Nerazzurri on a free transfer. In the 2022/23 campaign, the Cameroonian displaced Samir Handanovic in between the sticks at the Italian outfit and was a key player for them as the Serie A giants reached the Champions League final.
De Gea was an undisputed starter last season. The gaffer had the likes of Tom Heaton, Martin Dubravka and Jack Butland at his disposal. Therefore, the Spaniard was seemingly the only quality option the Dutch manager could rely on.
However, the veteran goalkeeper left a lot to be desired with his distribution. Ten Hag has looked to play the ball out from the back at United. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old has not been comfortable in that regard.
