Manchester United and Chelsea are to meet in the next 48 hours to discuss Mason Mount
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea and Manchester United are set to schedule a direct meeting to make a final decision on the Mason Mount deal.
The English star has emerged as a strong transfer target for the Red Devils, with Erik ten Hag expressing keen interest in the midfielder. Mount’s contract is also set to expire next summer, meaning the iron is hot for us to strike.
However, the Red Devils’ attempts to secure the 24-year-old’s services have been unsuccessful so far. Romano earlier stated that Chelsea turned down a £55 million bid from Man United. To put it into context, this was the third bid from United that was turned down this summer.
The Blues have offered a counter-offer, indicating that they would be willing to accept £58 million plus £7 million in additional payments for the academy graduate. However, United’s initial bid of £55 million is still on the table, and they are hopeful that Chelsea might reconsider their stance in the upcoming days.
Ten Hag fully supports the club’s decision to stand firm and avoid overpaying for a player who has only one year left on his contract.
While the 20-time English champions are not willing to make what they view as an unrealistic bid, they remain interested in signing Mount, and the player himself is eager to make the move to Old Trafford. Hence, a new round of talks between both clubs has been scheduled within the next 24–48 hours to make a final decision on the deal.
During the 2022-23 season, Mount was unable to showcase his best performances for Chelsea, contributing only three goals and six assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.
His season was marred by injuries, and he eventually underwent a pelvic surgery, which ruled him out for the latter part of the campaign.
It would have been better if Mount joined the Red Devils for the start of their preparations for the 2023-24 season in July. However, the ongoing takeover saga is not helping the cause either. nThe club’s ownership situation remains uncertain, with no preferred buyer being announced despite recent speculations.
While United wants to sign a new striker, they are also looking to strengthen the central midfield position. It has become increasingly likely that Mount will leave Stamford Bridge either this summer or at the end of the following season.
To avoid any issues during his time at Chelsea, he plans to express his commitment to giving his best for the club as long as he stays at his parent club. According to The Telegraph (subscription required), Mount’s current plan is to participate in pre-season training, ensuring he covers all possibilities for the upcoming season.
Chelsea have a series of matches scheduled in the United States, and it is expected that the 24-year-old may be part of that tour if there have been no further developments involving Man United or any other club.
The Red Devils will make their stance clear when both clubs meet within the next two days. However, Ten Hag would be ready to look for alternative midfield options if the Blues failed to budge on their demands.
In that case, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo could be another realistic target for United. They have already lost track of Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, and they can’t afford to miss more targets.
