Alex Telles hands potential advantage for Manchester United over Chelsea in the race for Diogo Costa
Manchester United have an advantage over Chelsea in the race for Diogo Costa, with FC Porto interested in Alex Telles, according to Correio da Manha (h/t Express).
The Primeira Liga outfit are keen on bringing the Brazil international back to the Estadio do Dragao in the ongoing transfer window. However, Sergio Conceicao’s team are worried about the full-back’s salary.
To that end, Porto hope to use the Red Devils’ attentiveness towards Costa in a player-plus-cash swap deal that would include Telles moving to the Primeira Liga outfit.
However, Chelsea have the Portugal international on their radar as well. The Blues are willing to pay the shot-stopper’s £64.5 million release clause, but in three instalments.
As things stand, United are not keen on paying such a hefty fee to the Dragoes. However, the inclusion of the Brazilian left-back in a potential deal would seemingly reduce that burden to a certain extent.
Telles spent a number of successful years at Porto before signing for the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2020. Unfortunately, the 30-year-old has been unable to make a mark with the Red Devils.
Luke Shaw was preferred on the left-hand side of the defence by Erik ten Hag last season. We also have Tyrell Malacia in our ranks.
As for the goalkeeping department, United seemingly need a new quality number one. David de Gea was the first choice in the previous campaign but could part ways with the Manchester-based club on a free transfer in the coming days.

Thus, Costa is evidently a great option to have our eyes on. The 23-year-old has shown a lot of potential over the last few seasons. But will we beat Chelsea to the promising goalkeeper’s signature? Only time will tell.
