Manchester United agree a deal for Watford wonderkid Harry Amass
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have successfully completed a deal to sign 16-year-old left-back Harry Amass from Watford.
He is set to become Erik ten Hag‘s first signing of this ongoing summer transfer window. The talented young player has committed to a long four-year contract with United.
Amass had a decent season in the Championship, where he had the chance to train with the first team. Remarkably, at the age of only 15, he was named as an unused substitute in Watford’s FA Cup third-round match against Reading in January.
Despite his young age, Amass has already achieved notable milestones in his career. He made his debut for the England under-15 team when he was just 14 years old. Currently, he is an integral part of the England under-16 squad, demonstrating his exceptional talent and potential.
The English defender’s impressive performances for Watford’s under-18 team stood out the most, particularly in matches against strong opponents like Everton and Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup.
He also received opportunities to feature for the club’s under-21 side, further emphasising his development and promise. Hence, Amass was widely recognised as one of the most promising talents in Watford’s youth setup.
However, the club has now lost a young gem after recently letting another talented youngster, Adrian Blake, join Dutch side FC Utrecht earlier in the transfer window. Meanwhile, United have roped in yet another talented player under Ten Hag’s reign.
As United finalise the signing of Amass, the fans are eagerly waiting to see him progress within the renowned ranks of the club’s academy. The 16-year-old has the potential to become a valuable asset for Man United’s future endeavours.
While the English starlet is not expected to immediately challenge Luke Shaw or Tyrell Malacia for a spot in United’s lineup, his signing represents an investment in the club’s future due to his exceptional potential.
Ten Hag has a preference for Shaw in the left-back position, but injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez towards the end of the previous season led Shaw to become a reliable option as a centre-back. This shift allowed Malacia to receive more playing time.
