PSG and Manchester United leading contenders for SL Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos
Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are the leading contenders to sign SL Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos this summer, according to Correio da Manha (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are ‘in the lead’ to acquire the Portugal international’s services. Erik ten Hag wants to add a new number nine to the squad in the ongoing transfer window and admires the 21-year-old.
Ramos made his way through the youth ranks at the Eagles. In the previous campaign, the youngster was a regular in the Primeira Liga outfit’s starting lineup. However, Darwin Nunez was their talisman at that time.
But last summer, the Uruguay international made a move to Liverpool. As a result, the Portuguese has been central to Roger Schmidt’s plan since then.
To that end, the 21-year-old has caught a lot of people’s attention. He was prolific for Benfica in the 2022/23 term. The striker also announced himself on the international stage after scoring a hat-trick against Switzerland in the 2022 World Cup round of 16.
PSG have lost Lionel Messi this summer. For now, they have Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in their ranks. However, they lack any additional established forward’s in their squad.
On the other hand, United were unable to rely on Anthony Martial in the previous campaign. The French national has been on the sidelines for the majority of the period since Erik ten Hag’s arrival in the Old Trafford side’s dugout.
The Red Devils signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley in January to provide cover upfront. However, the Holland international had to be regularly called upon due to the lack of options in the striking department.
