Manchester United are frontrunners in the race to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana

According to the Evening Standard (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are leading the race for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Athletic (Subscription Required), meanwhile, claim that Erik ten Hag wants a goalkeeper that can play out from the back.

They then go on to analyse how the Cameroonian star is suited to that role. Onana has been impressive for Inter who bought him on a free transfer and now look set to capitalise on a huge profit from the player.

Due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, Inter are in a position where they need to raise funds through player sales and Onana has quickly become one of their prized assets.

Chelsea have also shown interest in the player but it seems that United have taken the lead for the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

Onana has played under Erik Ten Hag during their time at Ajax and was part of the young team which took the UEFA Champions League by storm and narrowly missed out on a place in the finals.

Even this year, in the Champions League final between Inter and Manchester City, Onana was one of the best players on the pitch and showed his ability to comfortably play out from the back, which is a major asset in beating the opposition press.

United lack a goalkeeper of such ability and while the standoff in negotiations between the club and David De Gea is taking longer than usual, in the end, the Spaniard is not the right choice in the long run for the club.

Onana, on the other hand, would instantly improve the defence and allow us to play more possession-based football just as Ten Hag played with his previous teams.

Inter would definitely not let Onana go on a low fee and it is one of the signings which has the capacity to instantly improve the team, hence money should not be seen as a major factor.
