Leicester City playmaker James Maddison identified by Manchester United as Mason Mount alternative
Manchester United have identified Leicester City star James Maddison as an alternative if they are unable to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea, according to The Sun (h/t Metro).
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the Blues’ midfielder ahead of the upcoming transfer window. To that end, the 24-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford side.
However, the Stamford Bridge side are not budging on their valuation for the England international. As a result, Man United are concerned about not being able to reach a consensus with the West London club for the playmaker.
To that end, Mount’s compatriot Maddison is on the Red Devils’ radar as an option. The 26-year-old has one year left on his current contract at the King Power Stadium side.
The English national is expected to leave the Foxes in the upcoming transfer window after their relegation from the Premier League. But the East Midlands-based club will demand £50 million for him.
However, the Old Trafford side are not the only team eyeing Maddison. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the race to acquire his services, with the Magpies the frontrunners at the moment.
Bruno Fernandes has been Man United’s first choice in the playmaking role for several years now. In the 2022/23 campaign, the Portugal international was once again vital and was ever-present in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
However, we do not seem to have adequate cover for the former Sporting CP star. The Dutch manager tried playing Jadon Sancho and Wout Weghorst in the number 10 role a few times, but it was hit-and-miss.

Maddison shone for Leicester despite their poor campaign. The English national has a lot of talent and he is seemingly a cut above the Championship. But will the Old Trafford side end up signing the 26-year-old? Only time will tell.
