Gary Neville makes striker and goalkeeper transfer request to Manchester United
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged the Red Devils to add a number nine and a shot-stopper to their squad in the upcoming transfer window.
In the attack, Erik ten Hag had to rely heavily on the likes of Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst as his strikers. In between the sticks, David de Gea was the first choice. While the Spaniard made some clutch saves over the course of the campaign, he was also prone to errors.
Speaking exclusively to Metro, Neville, who spent his entire career at the Old Trafford side, has requested the transfer of a striker and a goalkeeper to the club’s ranks in the upcoming transfer window.
“You have got to start with a centre forward and a goalkeeper. If you don’t have those two positions fixed in a football team you are massively struggling.
“Manchester United are massively struggling particularly up front but it has come to the time where they have to get a top goalkeeper.”
In the 2022/23 campaign, the Dutch manager had to rely heavily on Marcus Rashford to find the back of the net on a consistent basis. Towards the end of the season, United struggled a bit as the goals dried up for the England international.
The 25-year-old shouldered the burden of the Red Devils’ attack. Unfortunately, none of our other forwards contributed considerably up front.
Martial was on the sidelines for most of the campaign. Ten Hag was unable to count on the French national. On the other hand, while Weghorst worked hard, the Burnley loanee seemingly does not possess a lot of quality in the final third of the pitch.
As for the goalkeeping department, apart from De Gea, the gaffer had Tom Heaton and Jack Butland at his disposal for the second half of the campaign. With all due respect, the two English nationals are not up to our standards.
Therefore, the former Atletico Madrid star kept his place as the number one. However, the 32-year-old does not look comfortable with the style of play the Dutch manager has brought to the Old Trafford side. The Spaniard leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet.

Therefore, a quality number nine and a shot-stopper should evidently be on top of United’s list this summer. While there are seemingly other areas of the pitch that need attention as well, Nevill is spot on with respect to the Manchester-based club’s needs at this moment.
