Newcastle United loan offer for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire rejected
Manchester United have rejected a loan offer from Premier League rivals Newcastle United for Harry Maguire ahead of the upcoming transfer window, according to The Sun (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Magpies were interested in acquiring the services of the England international on a temporary move for the 2023/24 season. However, the Red Devils have other plans for the centre-back.
To that end, the Old Trafford side prefer to part ways with the defender on a permanent basis in the coming weeks. In the English top flight, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur also have the 30-year-old on their radar.
Man United signed Maguire in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. The centre-back had shown immense promise and talent at the Foxes and had established himself as a pivotal member of Gareth Southgate’s setup back then.
The English national’s first few years at the Manchester-based club were decent. Unfortunately, since the 2021/22 campaign, the defender has left a lot to be desired.
Our captain has been inconsistent and shaky at the back for the Red Devils for some time now. With the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the 30-year-old has subsequently lost his place in the starting lineup.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Maguire was one of the first names on the team sheet. However, the Dutch manager’s appointment has seen the centre-back fall down the pecking order.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were the gaffer’s preferred duo at the back in the season that concluded recently. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw have been selected ahead of the former Leicester defender on a number of occasions.

As things stand, it looks like a challenging task for the English national to retain his place in the team. Therefore, it would seemingly be best for both parties to part ways. But a loan move to Newcastle does not make much sense for Man United, with the Magpies back in the big leagues.
