Real Madrid joined by Manchester United in race for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez
Manchester United have joined Spanish giants Real Madrid in the race to acquire the services of Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Argentina international is expected to leave the Nerazzurri this summer. Ahead of the upcoming transfer window, the striker’s representatives have held talks with a number of top European teams.
To that end, the Red Devils have been in touch with the 25-year-old’s camp and Premier League rivals Chelsea have also been contacted. The two clubs have been keeping tabs on him for several years.
Los Blancos are interested in Martinez as well. The Santiago Bernabeu side are long-term admirers of the Argentine. With Karim Benzema leaving the La Liga outfit, they evidently need a new number nine in their ranks.
As things stand, Madrid have Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo as their only two established forwards going into the upcoming campaign. Carlo Ancelotti’s team relied heavily on the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner over the last few years.
Martinez has enjoyed some impressive seasons so far at Inter. Simone Inzaghi’s team are set to take on Manchester City in the Champions League final on 10 June.
At United, Erik ten Hag had to rely on Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst for the second half of the 2022/23 season. The gaffer was unable to rely on the French national for most of the campaign due to his injury issues.
On the other hand, with all due respect, the Burnley loanee is not up to the Red Devils’ standards and showed as much with some tame displays in front of goal.

Thus, a new number nine should evidently be our priority in the upcoming transfer window. However, with Madrid also in pursuit of Martinez, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side will be able to match the Spanish giants.
