Wes Brown backs Erik ten Hag to take Manchester United forward despite the FA Cup Final defeat

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has backed Erik ten Hag to take the team forward despite suffering defeat in the FA Cup Final to Manchester City.

Before the kick-off on Saturday, this was perceived as a successful first season in charge for ten Hag. He led United to a third-place finish in the league, which is a considerable improvement from last season.

The Red Devils hadn’t won a trophy since Jose Mourinho’s Europa League triumph in 2017. Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup and was so close to making it a domestic double if his team would have won on Saturday.

So, one can understand where Brown is coming from. Here’s what the former defender said (h/t Manchester United website):

“First of all, the manager. We all know he’s been excellent and especially with the players he’s got as well. He’s got the best out of them, securing the Champions League for next season alongside two cup finals. My star players are Rashy, Luke [Shaw] and Casemiro, for me.

“It’s been a good season, there has been progress and listen, if we would have won [the FA Cup final] you could have said it was unbelievable season. Ultimately we have progressed and we are getting better. A few new additions and the manager will take us forward even more.”

David de Gea showed his frailties once again, this time on the biggest of stages. While we can give him a pass for the first Ilkay Gundogan goal, the second one should have been stopped.

Roy Keane was very vehement in suggesting that United should let go of the Spanish international this summer. It is probably time for the club to sign a new keeper. They are leading the race to sign Porto keeper Diogo Costa. Let’s wait and see if that comes out as an actual signing.

Up front, it goes without saying that if United and ten Hag want to take the next step in the coming season, they must sign a striker. Anthony Martial is inconsistent in performance and availability. Wout Weghorst should go back to his parent club.

A few hours ago, the Telegraph (subscription required) revealed that the Red Devils have made a bid for Mason Mount and are preparing a deal to sign Harry Kane. Although dealing with Daniel Levy won’t be easy, the club must do all they can to get the England captain to Old Trafford this summer.
