Roy Keane tells Manchester United to bin David de Gea after FA Cup final loss vs Manchester City
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has urged the club to bin David de Gea after the club’s 2-1 FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Ilkay Gundogan scored the first goal of the game within 30 seconds with a rocket of a volley from his right foot. De Gea stood rooted to his spot but there was hardly anything he could have done anything about.
Bruno Fernandes equalised from the spot before the German midfielder scored his second of the game, doing so early in the second half with a left-footed first-time volley from a Kevin de Bruyne ball.
The ball bounced in front of him and wasn’t hit with much conviction or pace. De Gea dove but only got a weak right hand to it, seeing the ball nestle in his net.
David de Gea has been poor
Gundogan thought he had a hat trick when De Gea parried an Erling Haaland shot straight into his path, only for the offside flag to go up. After the game, Keane slammed the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, saying, via Manchester Evening News:
“They need a new goalkeeper and world-class striker, I’m sick of saying it!. De Gea’s not good enough, he is not going to be the one to take United back to winning trophies.”
De Gea’s contract expires this summer but he is close to penning new terms. Erik ten Hag has already shown support to the Spanish custodian this season and it doesn’t seem likely that he will replace him so soon.
Although, one can’t be too sure about what Ten Hag has going on in his mind. He can be brutal if the situation calls for it. He retained Harry Maguire as the club’s captain last year but then went on to relegate him to the bench as the season went on.
