Manchester United are ahead of Premier League rivals to sign Porto keeper and Newcastle target Diogo Costa

As per Portuguese outlet A Bola (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are ahead of other clubs in the race to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the summer transfer window.

The report reveals that Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle United are also interested in the Portugal international. But it seems as if United are leading the race to get him.

Following another disastrous showing by David de Gea, this time on the grandest of stages against Manchester City, United must be looking to sign a new keeper in the coming summer window. Roy Keane, who has never been a big fan of de Gea, wants the Spaniard gone.

In the past few months, not only has de Gea looked dodgy on the ball, his shot-stopping capabilities have taken a downturn as well.

Coming back to Costa, he is a top young goalkeeper who epitomises how a modern-day player should operate in that position. The 23-year-old is good at shot-stopping and playing out from the back, something Erik ten Hag wants his keeper to do in the build-up play.

It remains to be seen whether United will pull the plug on de Gea this summer. It would not be wrong to think that if ten Hag drops the Spaniard from the starting spot, he would want to leave the club rather than play second fiddle.

To be honest, if the Red Devils want to taste more success in the coming years, they have to be ruthless in the transfer market. Getting rid of de Gea has to be a part of that ruthlessness.

They must take a leaf out of what Pep Guardiola did when he first came to Manchester City – immediately discarding Joe Hart because he was not good on the ball, even though he was a club legend.
