Empoli shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario is expected to leave the Serie A outfit in the upcoming transfer window amidst links to Manchester United.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Red Devils are eyeing the 26-year-old as their next number one. The Italian could be available for around €25 million next summer. However, AS Roma are also in the race to acquire his services.

Speaking to the media via MEN, Paolo Zanetti, the manager of Empoli, believes Vicario will leave in the coming weeks. The Serie A outfit’s gaffer feels the promising goalkeeper deserves to play for a top side.

“I don’t think that he’ll stay here. I think that after the two seasons that he’s had here, he deserves to go to a big club. My hope is that he can go somewhere to play at a very high level of football. That’s where he deserves to be, and not just because he’s a great player on the pitch.”

The Italian joined Gli Azzurri in the summer of 2021. Since then, he has been the first choice in between the sticks for them.

Last season, the 26-year-old was a pivotal part of Empoli’s starting lineup. The shot-stopper has kept his influence in the team in the current campaign as well.

However, despite Vicario’s impressive displays, Carlo Castellani Stadium side are not competing for much. The Gli Azzurri are 14th in the league table as things stand.

David de Gea has been in fine form for United since last season. Under Erik ten Hag, the Spaniard has kept his place in the team. Despite some clutch performances, the veteran goalkeeper has also had some howlers in goal for us in the current campaign.

The Dutch manager is seemingly keen on playing the ball out from the back. Unfortunately, in that regard, the 32-year-old often leaves a lot to be desired. Tom Heaton and Jack Butland are not up to the club’s standards either.

Thus, it looks like De Gea is coming to the end of his cycle at the Old Trafford side. But will Vicario be his successor? Only time will tell.
