Erik ten Hag unsure of what the future holds for Harry Maguire at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is unsure of whether Harry Maguire will stay at the Old Trafford side ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
The England international has lost his place in the team since the Dutch manager’s arrival in the Manchester-based club’s dugout. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been the gaffer’s preferred options in the backline.
Speaking to The Times via transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Ten Hag acknowledged that the former Leicester City defender’s situation is not ideal. As such, the former Ajax head coach does not know what the future holds for the 30-year-old.
Ten Hag on Maguire: “No one would be happy with this situation, he works very hard… but Varane is fantastic”, told @henrywinter on @timessport.

United signed Maguire in the summer of 2019 after his impressive displays in the 2018 World Cup. The English national has since been a key player for Gareth Southgate’s team, despite now being a bit-part player at the Old Trafford side.
Initially, the defender was ever-present in the Red Devils’ starting lineup as well. A few months into his stint at the Manchester-based club, the centre-back was handed the captain’s armband.
Unfortunately, he has not been consistent enough over the last few months. As a result, the 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order.

Not just Martinez and Varane, it looks like even Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are ahead of Maguire in Ten Hag’s plans. The Swedish national and the left-back have been paired up centrally on a number of occasions this season.
In the last few matches, with the World Cup-winning Argentine on the sidelines, the former SL Benfica defender has been paired up with Varane in the backline.
