Phil Jones honoured to represent Manchester United as departure announced
Manchester United star Phil Jones has penned an emotional letter after the club announced his departure after 12 years at the end of the season.
The defender’s existing deal at the Old Trafford side is set to expire in the coming months. As a result, the centre-back is set to become a free agent as the Red Devils will not extend his contract.
In an open letter (h/t Manchester Evening News) to everyone associated with United, the 31-year-old expressed his desire to contribute more than he has in recent years and thanked everyone at the club.
“To wear this shirt just once, to wear this badge and represent everyone associated with it, was an honour.
“I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played alongside.
“I want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me at Manchester United, where I’ve made friends for life.”
Jones signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2011 from Balckburn Rovers. He became a key player for Sir Alex Ferguson at the Old Trafford side.
Subsequently, in the 2012/13 campaign, which was the great Scottish gaffer’s last one in charge, the centre-back won the Premier League title at the Manchester-based club.
However, in recent times, the 31-year-old has been unreliable at United. In the last few seasons, the centre-back has hardly featured for the Red Devils and injury issues have not helped his cause either. In the last four seasons, the English national has made just six appearances in the league for us.
Still, Jones has been a brilliant servant at the Old Trafford side. Apart from winning the league title, the English national has also gotten his hands on the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and the Europa League.
United have not required the services of the 31-year-old in the current campaign. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been Ten Hag’s preferred options in the centre-back positions.
