Hannibal Mejbri leaves door open for Birmingham City return from Manchester United
Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri has left the door open regarding a return to Birmingham City in the upcoming campaign.
The Tunisia international has spent the 2022/23 season on loan at the Championship outfit from the Red Devils. In the Blues’ 2-1 loss to Sheffield United, the 20-year-old made his final appearance for the St Andrew’s side, coming on as a substitute.
Speaking to BirminghamLive (h/t Manchester Evening News), Hannibal was asked whether he would consider a return to Birmingham. To that question, the youngster replied in the affirmative.
“We will see at the end of the pre-season. Why not? You never know.”
The 20-year-old made his way to Man United in the summer of 2019. Over the years, the Tunisian has mostly played in the Red Devils’ youth teams.
In the previous campaign, Hannibal was handed a few opportunities by Ralf Rangnck in the first team. The youngster put in some encouraging and tenacious displays at a time when the Old Trafford side looked uninterested.
Erik ten Hag was then appointed in the Manchester-based club’s dugout at the end of last season. The Dutch manager decided that it would be best for the Tunisian to play his football elsewhere.
The 20-year-old’s temporary move to Birmingham has paid off. John Eustace’s team relied heavily on the midfielder in the first-team setup in the current campaign. He made 41 appearances in all competitions for the Championship outfit, scoring one goal and providing six assists.
Hannibal will return to United for now. The Red Devils have relied on Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the middle of the park. However, the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay have been given enough opportunities to prove themselves over the years at the Old Trafford side.

Therefore, we could evidently do with some fresh blood in the engine room. To that end, United could look in-house at Hannibal instead of opting to sign a new player. But it remains to be seen whether the Tunisian will be counted on by Ten Hag.
