Frenkie de Jong set to discuss Barcelona future amidst Manchester United interest
Barcelona superstar Frenkie de Jong is set to sit down and discuss his future with the Blaugrana amidst interest from Manchester United, according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Sun).
The Camp Nou side are looking to reduce the midfielder’s salary due to their ongoing financial issues. As a result, the Spanish giants could also add two or three more years to his current contract, which expires in the summer of 2026.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Holland international will oblige. He had rejected a wage reduction last year, which led to the La Liga outfit putting the 25-year-old on the market.
In the previous summer transfer window, the Red Devils were keen on acquiring De Jong’s services and had even agreed on a fee with Barcelona. But he did not want to leave the Camp Nou side.
Despite the Old Trafford side’s failure to get a hold of the midfielder’s signature, Erik ten Hag is still keen on adding the Holland international to his midfield ranks.
At Ajax, the Dutch manager worked with the 25-year-old. The gaffer oversaw his growth and development at the Eredivisie outfit.
As things stand, Ten Hag’s engine room consists of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen as the preferred duo in the midfield pivot. However, in their absence, United have looked underwhelming.
Fred and Scott McTominay have been on the bench for most of the season. But the two have put in inconsistent performances. While Marcel Sabitzer has been encouraging since signing on loan in January, he is set to return to Bayern Munich at the end of the campaign.
