Serie A giants AS Roma are ‘closing in’ on a deal for Houssem Aouar on a free transfer amidst interest from Manchester United, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The midfielder’s current contract at Olympique Lyon is set to expire at the end of the season. As a result, the Algerian national will be able to sign for the club of his choosing next summer.

As per a previous report from El Chiringuito TV on Twitter (h/t Express), the Red Devils have been in contact with the 24-year-old regarding a move to the Old Trafford side in the upcoming transfer window.

However, it looks like Jose Mourinho’s team have pipped us to Aouar’s signature. The Giallorossi have reached a principal agreement with the midfielder. Now, they are just waiting for the deal to be signed, which will be valid until 2028.

The Algerian has been at Lyon for his entire senior career. Over the years in France, the 24-year-old has thrived and caught a lot of people’s attention. But his time at Les Gones seems to be coming to an end.

Roma are fighting for a place in the top four in Serie A this season. However, their loss to Inter Milan on the weekend has dented their hopes. Mourinho has the likes of former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum, Bryan Cristante, and Lorenzo Pellegrini at his disposal in the middle of the park.

As for United, we signed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last summer. The two have been impressive under Erik ten Hag in the current campaign and have formed an exceptional partnership.

However, the gaffer does not have a lot of options at his disposal on the bench. The Red Devils evidently lack quality in depth in the engine room, with Fred and Scott McTominay being inconsistent over the years.
