Harry Maguire ‘will stay’ at Manchester United next summer and fight for place in team
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire ‘will stay’ at Manchester United beyond the upcoming transfer window, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror].
The England international has lost his place in the team in the current campaign. However, the centre-back is determined to fight for his place and retain a starting berth.
But it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will opt to keep the former Leicester City star next summer. The Old Trafford side need to raise funds in the coming months and the 30-year-old is seen as a sellable asset.
Maguire signed for United in the summer of 2019. The centre-back immediately became a key player for the Red Devils and was handed the captain’s armband just a few months into his career at the Manchester-based club.
Over the years, the 30-year-old has been a key player for the Old Trafford side. However, the previous campaign saw a dip in form from the defender.
Subsequently, the England international has fallen down the pecking order since Erik ten Hag’s arrival in the dugout. The Dutch manager has preferred the duo of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the backline.
But in recent weeks, with the French and Argentine out injured, Maguire has not put his best foot forward. Luke Shaw has also been deployed in central defence on a few occasions and has done relatively well.
Despite losing his place at United, Gareth Southgate has kept faith in the centre-back. The defender has done well when putting on the Three Lions’ shirt, regardless of his form at the Old Trafford side.

There is evidently a decent player within the 30-year-old. However, for some reason, he has been unable to showcase that with the Red Devils. Therefore, it seems wise for the English national to leave the club next summer, considering Varane and Martinez’s thriving partnership.
