Newcastle United ‘targeting’ Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay summer move
Premier League rivals Newcastle United are ‘targeting’ a summer move for Manchester United star Scott McTominay, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The midfielder still has two years left on his current contract at the Old Trafford side. However, the Magpies have been linked with a move for the Scotland international for some time now.
At the moment, the 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order. Erik ten Hag is also looking to add another player in the middle of the park at the end of the campaign.
As a result, McTominay could look for a move away from the Manchester-based club in the upcoming transfer window. Eddie Howe’s team have the midfielder on their shortlist to bolster their engine room.
Newcastle are flying high this season. The Magpies are fighting to finish in the top four and are in a good position to do so as things stand.
In January 2022, the Tyneside outfit signed Bruno Guimaraes. Howe has also counted upon Joelinton and Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park for the majority of the campaign.
United signed Casemiro last summer. The former Real Madrid star has been pivotal to Ten Hag’s plans at the Old Trafford side. This season, the Brazilian has been ever-present in the Red Devils’ starting lineup.
Thus, McTominay, who graduated from the Manchester-based club’s academy, has been a bit-part player for the Dutch manager. He has made 35 appearances in all competitions in the 2022/23 campaign. However, the Scottish national has started in just 10 league matches.

The 26-year-old is still in his prime years. However, it does not look like he will be able to pip the likes of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the pecking order anytime soon. Therefore, it would make sense if the midfielder opted to make a switch to the Tyneside outfit next summer.
