Pep Guardiola feels Manchester United fans shouldn’t be scared of Manchester City winning the treble

Pep Guardiola has told Manchester United fans to not be scared about Manchester City emulating their treble success of 1999 this time around.

After comfortably beating Sheffield United in the first semi-final of the FA Cup on Saturday, City go one step closer to winning the trifecta of major trophies (the league, Champions League and FA Cup), something which was last done by United in 1999 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Along with reaching the FA Cup final, City are favourites to lift the title after Arsenal bottled their last three games and dropped six points. They are also the front-runners to win their first Champions League after smashing Bayern Munich in the quarter-final.

Here’s what Guardiola said about potentially lifting the treble and suggesting United fans not to be scared (h/t Mirror):

“They (United) don’t have to be scared. We are neighbours – and neighbours are always nice to each other. We are still far away (from the Treble).”

As good a manager as Pep is, he does have a collection of weird comments he tends to make every now and then. This can be added to that list.

He is trying to be funny here but is nowhere near that. We all know the tribalism in the rivalry between the two biggest clubs in Manchester.

We respect the achievements of City in the last decade, but won’t forget the route they took in getting there. So, even if they win the treble, it won’t match the vibe and romance of what United did 24 years ago.

For now, let’s focus on beating Brighton and Hove Albion in the second semi-final of the FA Cup and get a direct chance of stopping the neighbours from winning the treble.
