Manchester United eye Chelsea shot-stopper Edouard Mendy to replace David de Gea
Edouard Mendy, who plays for Premier League rivals Chelsea, is being eyed by Manchester United as a replacement for David de Gea, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The former Atletico Madrid star’s current contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season. As a result, the Spaniard’s future at the Old Trafford side is uncertain. The Manchester-based club would be willing to make an offer for Senegalese if the 32-year-old were to leave.
One of the names on United’s radar is the Blues’ goalkeeper. Apart from the Manchester-based club, Serie A giants Juventus also want the 31-year-old to succeed Wojciech Szczesny in between the sticks.
Mendy made his way to the West London club in the summer of 2020 from Stade Rennais. In his debut campaign with the Stamford Bridge side, the shot-stopper lifted the Champions League trophy under Thomas Tuhcel.
However, in the last few months, the Senegal international has lost his place in Chelsea’s team. Kepa Arrizabalaga has overtaken the 31-year-old in the pecking order.
The Old Trafford side have counted on De Gea for over a decade as their number one. However, under Erik ten Hag, while the 32-year-old has made some impressive saves, he leaves a lot to be desired in certain aspects.
Against Sevilla in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, the Spaniard’s deficiencies with the ball at his feet were on display. The Red Devils ended up losing 3-0.
Mendy is not renowned for his distribution either. Therefore, it seems a bit odd that United are being linked with the Chelsea shot-stopper.

Also, instead of going after the Senegalese, who is 31 years old, it would evidently be wiser for the Old Trafford side to pursue a young goalkeeper with huge potential.
