Gary Neville defends Harry Maguire during Manchester United loss to Sevilla
Manchester United legend Gary Neville came to the defence of Harry Maguire after Manchester United conceded the first goal against Sevilla.
The centre-back was culpable as the home side took the lead in under 10 minutes of the game. David de Gea’s pass into the England international saw three players from the Spanish side close down the 30-year-old, which saw him give away the ball. Subsequently, Youssef En-Nesyri gave the La Liga outfit the lead.
Taking to Twitter via Manchester Evening News, Neville, who played as a defender for the Old Trafford side for his entire career, backed Maguire after the incident and seems to blame De Gea for the first goal.
“Maguire will get battered but that pass from De Gea I wouldn’t like!”
That set the tone for the match as Sevilla were on top of us for most of the proceedings. United created a few opportunities in the first half but were unable to take them.
Unfortunately, just after the break, Loic Bade gave the hosts a two-goal lead. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s team scored from a corner in the 47th minute.
After that, the La Liga outfit were in the driving seat and were comfortable for most of the match. The Red Devils were unable to do what the Spanish side did in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford, coming back from a two-goal deficit.
The second leg on Thursday (20 April) at the Ramon Sanchez Pijuan Stadium eventually ended in a 3-0 defeat for us. De Gea was culpable for the third goal as he scuffed his lines and gifted the ball to En-Nesyri.
Maguire has found game time at United hard to come by since Ten Hag’s arrival. But with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane on the sidelines, the England international had the opportunity to prove himself. Unfortunately, the defender was poor overall in Seville.

The 30-year-old seems to lose his confidence when he puts on the Red Devils’ shirt. But hopefully, from now until the end of the season, the centre-back will be at his best to achieve our objectives in the other competitions.
