Dimitar Berbatov urges Manchester United to keep Anthony Martial

Manchester United icon Dimitar Berbatov has urged the Red Devils to keep a hold of his former AS Monaco teammate Anthony Martial.

The Bulgarian played alongside the France international during their time together at the Ligue 1 outfit in the 2014/15 season. Subsequently, in the summer of 215, the Old Trafford side acquired the 27-year-old’s services after an impressive spell with the Red and Whites.

However, Martial has been inconsistent over the years and has been unable to fulfil his potential. But speaking to Betfred (h/t Metro), Berbatov, who spent four years at United, feels the French national can showcase the full array of his talent at the Manchester-based club.

“I would like to see him stay. I played with Anthony at Monaco and I know that he has the ability to be better than he’s showing. The only thing he needs to do is stay injury free and he needs to know that the manager trusts him.”

The 27-year-old had a promising start to his career at the Old Trafford side. In the 2019/20 campaign, it looked like the striker had finally hit his peak for the Red Devils.

Unfortunately, Martial was unable to continue in a similar vein in the following seasons. Then, with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer of 2021, the French national lost his place in the team.

As a result, the forward joined Sevilla on loan in January 2022. But the 27-year-old did not enjoy a fruitful spell in Spain either and returned to United.

However, Erik ten Hag showed faith in Martial during pre-season. The striker put in some encouraging displays during the friendlies but got injured before the Dutch manager’s first competitive game in charge of the Red Devils.

Since then, the French national has had multiple fitness issues and has been in and out of the squad. We did sign Wout Weghorst in January to provide cover for the 27-year-old, but the Holland international has left a lot to be desired.

Despite Martial’s limited game time in the current campaign, he has managed to contribute immensely. However, the French national has been unreliable. If his injuries persist, it would be wise for the Old Trafford side to part ways with the striker.
