Diogo Dalot delighted to be scoring his first league goal for Manchester United
Manchester United fullback Diogo Dalot happy to be scoring his first league goal for the club, that too in his 100th appearance.
The Portugal international scored the second and the game-clinching goal for the Red Devils as they eventually ease past Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the City Ground.
Dalot played at left-back with no Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. The 24-year-old did not have many difficulties dealing with the threats of Brennan Johnson and instead was a constant menace for the Forest defenders down that left-hand side.
Here’s what the Portuguese on scoring his first league goal for the club, amassing 100 appearances and the important week coming up (h/t BBC):
“It was a release of emotions [celebrations after scoring the goal], more than the goal it was the moment of the goal, we needed it to be more comfortable. 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go, it’s going to be a war, so it came at the right moment.
It’s a happy day for me [100 appearances], to play for this club is always a pleasure. We showed personality and character today, we showed composure and controlled the game.
“Big week [coming up], two decisive games, we want to be in position to fight for trophies. Now we have a chance to get close to a final, and to get to a final. Hopefully we win both games.”
Even if it may be out of necessity, Erik ten Hag might have found out that Dalot can play as a left-back too. It is a good asset to have when a fullback is comfortable playing on either side. However, the sample size of him playing there is just a solitary game though. So, let’s hold our horses.
Coming back to the game, after seeing Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur lose on Saturday, it was important for United to win and strengthen their position in the table. Right now, they must be favourites to finish third in the league.
As Dalot touched on, big games keep on coming for ten Hag’s men. The second leg of the Europa League quarter-final tie away at Sevilla awaits on Thursday, while the semi-final of the FA Cup against Brighton comes next Sunday.

United are still on course to clinch a cup treble, which would be an amazing achievement for ten Hag in his first season. He needs to take it game-by-game though. The second leg against Sevilla would be tough following the blow-up of the two-goal lead at Old Trafford in the first leg.
