Lisandro Martinez injury not an Achilles issue after Manchester United vs Sevilla

Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez went off with an injury late in the game against Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.

The La Liga outfit made their way to Old Trafford on Thursday (13 April). After a fast start from the Red Devils, the Seville-based club managed to somehow claw a draw in the final minutes of the match.

But the Argentine’s injury was another big blow that United suffered in the 86th minute. However, speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Erik ten Hag has allayed any fears of the knock being related to the centre-back’s Achilles.

“No, it is not the area. But I can’t tell what it is. But it is not the area of Achilles.

“I think he will not play on Sunday. It looks like that but I can’t say what is the diagnosis and I prefer to wait and then we are clear and we know exactly what it is.”

The Red Devils were cruising in the game. Marcel Sabitzer scored a brace in the first 20 minutes of the match. Throughout the fixture, we had Jose Luis Mendilibar’s team on the back foot.

Unfortunately, the Old Trafford side did not take their chances. In the end, we were made to rue the day as two own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire towards the final minutes of the game cost us the lead going into the second leg.

Martinez, who has been an inspiring summer 2022 signing, also seems to have picked up a severe knock. The Argentine was first carried off the pitch by two of his compatriots who played for Sevilla.

Then, on the sidelines, the centre-back was put on a stretcher. United could not replace the 25-year-old since we had already made our five changes in the game.

One of the substitutions the Red Devils made came at half-time, with Raphael Varane being withdrawn for Maguire. The French national also picked up an apparent injury. But it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old’s knock is anything to be worried about.

With Martinez and Varane seemingly out, the Old Trafford side have lost their two main defenders. Thankfully, we have enough talent in our skipper and Victor Lindelof to fill the void to some extent for the coming weeks.
