Erik ten Hag conversation convinced Christian Eriksen to join Manchester United
Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen was convinced to join the club in the summer of 2022 after a conversation with Erik ten Hag.
The Denmark international signed for the Red Devils as a free agent after a brief spell with Brentford. Since then, the midfielder has become one of the Dutch manager’s key players at the Old Trafford side.
Speaking on UTD Podcast (h/t Manchester Evening News), the 31-year-old revealed that he was open to staying with the Bees. However, speaking with Ten Hag on the phone led to the former Inter Milan star making up his mind.
“At the time, I wasn’t closed down on going back to Brentford, I wanted to see what else came in or [if] something could tempt me away from how good it was there. And then, of course, United came in.
“[I was] speaking to the manager [Erik ten Hag] on the phone and then I could actually see myself going to United. Luckily, they pulled through [to make the move] and I did as well. So, in the end, coming here was definitely very special.”
Eriksen has become a central figure in the middle of the park at United over the last few months. After the gaffer tinkered with the midfielder’s position at the start of the season, he then stuck with the Danish national playing alongside Casemiro in the double pivot.
The two have been impressive at the Old Trafford side this season. As a result, the 31-year-olds have cemented their place in the starting lineup at the Manchester-based club.
But Eriksen’s injury was a major setback for the Red Devils. Subsequently, in the last few weeks, Casemiro has also picked up multiple suspensions.
The Denmark and Brazilian internationals’ absence has been felt at United. The likes of Fred and Scott McTominay leave a lot to be desired in the middle of the park.
Thankfully, the former Tottenham Hotspur star returned to action for the Red Devils in the 2-0 win over Everton. Casemiro is also set to be back from his four-game ban after picking up a straight red card.
