According to Daily Star (h/t Express), Manchester United have slapped a huge price tag of £50m if clubs want to sign Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay.

The report suggests that the Scotland international is keen on plying his trade elsewhere, with Newcastle United being the chief suitors. It remains to be seen whether the Magpies would be put off by a price tag like that for the player.

If we look back at the last decade or so, United have not been able to sell players at a higher cost to use that money directly on a new signing. Only Cristiano Ronaldo’s sale to Real Madrid (£80m) and Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter Milan (£73m) generated more than £50m each.

So, if the Red Devils manage to get the desired price for McTominay, it would be a massive coup knowing that the Scotsman has been at the club since his youth days.

The report reveals that with Casemiro, Fred, Christian Eriksen and others keen on sharing the minutes around, United boss Ten Hag might sell the 26-year-old. The Dutchman is instead keen on making Marcel Sabitzer’s stay permanent after the Austrian was signed on loan from Bayern Munich in January.

The Telegraph has recently reported that United have shortlisted two Brighton and Hove Albion midfielders – Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister for a possible addition in the summer. The signing of either of them could command a fee of more than £70m.

If this is to be McTominay’s last season at Old Trafford, we wish him all the best. Although he is a hard-working player who will do anything for the badge, the quality has lacked at times. The team could do with a more combative yet technically strong midfielder in the Scotsman’s position.
