Middlesbrough ‘monitoring’ Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams
Championship outfit Middlesbrough are ‘monitoring the situation’ of Manchester United defender Brandon Williams, according to transfer expert Ekrem Konour on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).
Michael Carrick’s team are interested in the 22-year-old. In the upcoming transfer window, the Red Devils will likely make the England U21 international on loan or a permanent transfer.
Williams made his way through the youth ranks at the Old Trafford side. Then, in the 2019/20 season, the full-back broke into the Manchester-based club’s first team.
However, since then, the defender has hardly featured for United. In the previous campaign, the 22-year-old was on loan at Norwich, where he played regular minutes.
But this season, the English national has hardly had any opportunities under Erik ten Hag. He has made just one appearance, coming on as a substitute in the final minutes of the 2-0 Carabao Cup fourth-round win over Burnley.
Carrick became part of United’s coaching staff after his retirement in 2018. The ex-Red Devil left the Manchester-based club with Erik ten Hag’s arrival. Earlier in the season, the 41-year-old was appointed Middlesbrough manager.

The former Old Trafford side’s midfielder has done an exceptional job in the Championship outfit’s dugout. As a result, they are in the mix to attain promotion to the Premier League.
United have enough depth in the right-back and left-back areas. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw have been the Dutch manager’s preferred options in the team, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia have deputised admirably.

Therefore, Williams has a difficult task at hand to win minutes on the pitch at the Old Trafford side. However, the English national is still young and has time to kickstart his career elsewhere. A move to Middlesbrough under a familiar face like Carrick seems like a wise option for the youngster.
