Premier League rivals Manchester City have ‘joined’ Manchester United in the race to sign Celta Vigo youngster Gabri Veiga, according to reports in Spain (h/t The Sun).

The La Liga outfit have a tough task on their hands to keep a hold of the 20-year-old beyond the current campaign. That is because the promising midfielder has a meagre £35 million release clause.

Carlos Mourino, the president of the Abanca-Balaídos side, has already accepted that keeping Veiga at the club is impossible.

At least four Premier League teams are interested in the Spain international. Apart from the Sky Blues and the Red Devils, La Liga giants Real Madrid are also keen on acquiring the youngster’s services.

Pep Guardiola is looking to bolster his squad’s engine room. At the moment, the futures of midfielders Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva at the Etihad Stadium side are uncertain.

City have the likes of Kevin de Bryne, Rodri and Kalvin Phillips in their ranks as well. But it remains to be seen whether they will add further reinforcements to their ranks in the coming months.

Veiga has broken onto the scene in the current campaign. The 20-year-old is enjoying his first full season in the Spanish outfit’s senior squad. He has made 25 appearances in the league for Carlos Carvalhal’s team, scoring nine goals and providing three assists.

United have relied on Bruno Fernandes heavily this season. The Portuguese has cemented his place in the number 10 position over the years. Recently, Jadon Sancho has also been deployed in the playmaking role by Erik ten Hag.

However, the Red Devils’ engine room could evidently do with some fresh blood, considering the lack of impact the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have had over the years. Veiga’s release clause presents a decent opportunity for the Old Trafford side. Hopefully, we will be able to beat City to the 20-year-old’s signature.
