History of the Team Evolution

The first stage involved the establishment of a men’s soccer club (a women’s team was not considered). It was founded in 1878 and was initially known as Newton Heath.

The club was renamed Manchester United only in 1902. Ninety years later, it became one of the founders of the English Premier League.

Fans have access to old photographs that remind them of the development of the soccer team. They depict players after successful performances; some are no longer alive. Such rarities are available online, in printed books, the profile museum. The primary developmental milestones are listed in the table.

The first players were a group of railroaders who started out playing in regional tournaments (Manchester Cup and Lancashire Cup).

From 1887 they switched to playing in the national team. At that time, the team members celebrated their first achievement – participation in the FA Cup. They played alongside prominent players from the Welsh national team, which included:

  • Jack Doughty;
  • Jack Powell;
  • Joe Davis;
  • Roger Doughty.

The second striking achievement was joining the Football League in 1892. After that, the club became independent, detached from the railway station, and even had its secretary.

For many years the players trained on a semi-destroyed field, after which they had the opportunity to hone their skills in Clayton. 1910 saw the stadium’s appearance in Old Trafford, which became the team’s home ground. It now has a capacity of up to 75,000 spectators.

History of the Club after the Renaming

The renaming to Manchester United is one of the significant milestones in the team’s development. Even the appearance of players’ uniforms changed: instead of gold and green, they used white and red.

In September 1903, Ernest Mangnall was appointed secretary (similar functions are now reserved for the general manager). In 1906, under his leadership, the team entered the First Division. In addition to Jack Peddie, a forward, and Harry Moger, a goalkeeper, the lineup included:

  • Alex Bell;
  • Charlie Roberts;
  • Dick Duckworth.

Other key players were transferred from another Manchester team, such as Sandy Turnbull, Jimmy Bannister, Herbert Burgess, and Billy Meredith. They soon became key players. In 1906, the critical events included the change of the striker. It was George Wall.

The team managed to win the Super Cup in England. The group became champions in 1910 when Enoch West joined the squad.

History of MANCHESTER-UNITED and how the team became popular

The Era of Alex Ferguson

In 1986 Alex Ferguson took over Manchester United, which positively affected the team’s fame and popularity. It was in eleventh place during the championship’s first season, which was considered a good result.

Already in 1987, the club finished second, but it suffered a long streak of matches without wins. Only in 1990 the situation changed for the better: it was marked by a successful performance during the FA Cup with a victory in the final, which helped Alex retain his coaching position.

Fortunately, the European Super Cup was won; the following year, the victory was repeated. In the summer of 1991, there was another positive change – the lineup included goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel who previously had played for clubs in Denmark.

The second achievement was the transfer of the charismatic Frenchman Eric Cantona, thanks to whom the team won the league title. Such a situation occurred for the first time since 1967.

In July 1993, the fans were excited by the news of another addition – the reception of Irish midfielder Roy Keane.

Soon the team won two landmark victories – in the FA Cup and the Premier League, after which it was talked about not only in European countries. The following season saw the admission of youngsters that included:

  • Paul Scoles;
  • David Beckham;
  • Nicky Butt;
  • Harry Neville;
  • Phil Neville.

After the renewal of the squad, the team again won twice (in the FA Cup and the Premier League). Subsequently, it played with varying success; the replacement was not the last, as young people and buyers of famous players were attracted.

Only sometimes performances on the European stage were successful, although the team became the champion of England for the twentieth time in history.

Another change was waiting for it – in May 2013, Alex Ferguson announced that he would resign after the end of the season. It was necessary to look for a new manager for further victories.

Soccer Club after 2013

Alex Ferguson remained only a board of directors member, as David Moyes (signed for six years) was appointed coach on May 9.

Unfortunately, the results were poor, as the team managed to qualify for the Champions League only in seventh place. Ryan Giggs took over the duties of the head coach. By the summer of 2014, a Dutch national named Louis van Gaal was officially appointed to such a position.

There was another replacement – the purchase of attacking midfielder Angel Di Maria. The positive result is difficult to overestimate – the team returned to the Champions League for the season, which began in 2015 and ended in 2016. By the end of it, the head coach was Jose Mourinho, who helped the team win:

  • The EFL Cup, currently known as the Carabao Cup;
  • FA Community Shield;
  • The UEFA Europa League.

In 2017 Manchester United’s journey was marked by a new achievement – second place in the Premier League (unfortunately, not the first).

The following season was the worst in history: Jose Mourinho was fired on December 15, 2018, after a painful defeat against Liverpool. Until the end of the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, a specialist from Norway, took over as head coach. His record is eight wins in a row.
