Alex Telles not thinking about his Manchester United future amidst loan spell at Sevilla
Speaking to Estadio Deportivo (h/t Manchester Evening News), loaned-out 30-year-old Manchester United left-back Alex Telles is not thinking about his future with a focus on doing well at Sevilla.
Days after signing Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord to bolster the left-back department, United sent Telles on a season-long loan to Sevilla in August 2022.
The 30-year-old has had a decent spell with the Spanish side, assisting three goals in 26 appearances in all competitions. He’s been used as a left-back and centre-back in a back three by Jorge Sampaoli.
Here’s what the Brazilian said when asked about his future after the loan spell at Sevilla ends (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“What I have to do is my job in the best possible. I don’t think about the future because that depends on what I do now. Now I have to play and train.
“I’ve always said that I’m happy at Sevilla, I’m treated very well and now I have to play and do my best, which is the most important thing.”
A few days ago, it was reported in Mirror that the Spanish side are not interested in keeping Telles permanently after the end of this season.
It means that the player will be back on United’s book in the summer. Erik ten Hag already has two top-quality left-backs in Luke Shaw and Malacia.
That, added to the fact that his contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt) tells us that it would be sensible for the club to sell this summer, rather than letting him go for free in 2024.
If Erik ten Hag would have been confident about getting the best out of the player, he would not have loaned him out in his first summer as the manager.
So, it would be best for both parties to part ways soon. For United’s sake, they would hope to get some cash from his sale to use to bolster other departments, namely the midfield and forward line.
