Manchester United duo Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst called up by the Netherlands
Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst of Manchester United have been called up by the Netherlands national squad for the upcoming international break.
The Oranje are set to face France and Gibraltar in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Ronald Koeman, who replaced Loui van Gaal after the 2022 World Cup, will count on the Red Devils’ defender and striker.
In Qatar, the 23-year-old and the Burnley loanee were part of the Netherlands squad. While the left-back did not feature for the Oranje in the Middle East, the former Wolfsburg star played a pivotal role for them.
Weghorst was mostly used as a substitute at the 2022 World Cup. However, he came on to good effect against Argentina in the quarter-finals as the Netherlands made a comeback after being two goals down.
The 30-year-old scored the first goal for the Oranje to inspire Van Gaal’s team to the penalty shootouts. But La Albiceleste went through and ended up lifting the World Cup.
Subsequently, in January, United acquired the Holland international’s services to bolster the attack. He has been handed regular minutes in the last few weeks due to Anthony Martial’s absence.
As for Malacia, the Red Devils signed him from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022. Initially, the 23-year-old had pipped Luke Shaw in the pecking order. However, the England international has become a key player for Erik ten Hag.
In the current campaign, the Dutch left-back has made 30 appearances in all competitions. However, he has started in just 10 Premier League games so far for the Old Trafford side.
