Manchester United to battle Chelsea for Borussia Dortmund shot-stopper Gregor Kobel
Manchester United will have to battle Premier League rivals Chelsea to sign Borussia Dortmund shot-stopper Gregor Kobel, according to Sport1 (h/t The Sun).
The Red Devils are keeping an eye on the Switzerland international. At the moment, David de Gea is the number one at the Old Trafford side. However, the Spain international contract at the club is coming to an end.
As for the Blues, they have held a meeting with the 25-year-old’s camp over the possibility of a transfer. The goalkeeper was impressive during the Stamford Bridge side’s round of 16 tie against BVB in the Champions League.
Kobel signed for the Bundesliga giants in the summer of 2021 from VfB Stuttgart. The Swiss national still has three years left on his existing deal at the Signal Iduna Park side.
Since the previous campaign, the 25-year-old has been the first choice at Dortmund. In the current campaign, the shot-stopper has made 25 appearances in all competitions for BVB, keeping 12 clean sheets.
Graham Potter has Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy at his disposal at the moment. The former Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper has pipped the Senegal international in the pecking order this season.
Mendy signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2020 and became the number one. However, in recent months, the 31-year-old has been underwhelming and Kepa has replaced him in between the sticks.
De Gea has been in fine form for United since the previous campaign. However, the 32-year-old is backed up by Tom Heaton and Jack Butland at the moment. Also, while the Spaniard has been impressive, he leaves a lot to be desired with his distribution.
