Southampton manager Ruben Selles is “not happy” with the Saints’ draw against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday (12 March).

The Hampshire-based club, who are bottom of the table in the English top flight, visited Old Trafford. However, with the Red Devils going a player down after Casemiro’s red card at the half-hour mark, the Saint Mary’s Stadium side had chances to win the game.

Speaking after the 0-0 draw to Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Selles, who took charge of Southampton after the dismissal of Nathan Jones, was impressed with his team’s display but wanted more from the game.

“As I say two days ago, I said before to you that we are going to go and compete our very best and that we are going to try and win every football game. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, we are not happy with the point but we are happy with the performance.”

The Saints are currently in a relegation battle. Therefore, every point counts for them. Against United, the Saint Mary’s Stadium side, especially Theo Walcott, had a couple of opportunities to take the lead. However, they were unable to beat David de Gea in goal.

The Red Devils had to clear the ball off the line at one point. James Ward-Prowse, who is dangerous from set-pieces, also hit the crossbar with his free kick.

But the Old Trafford side could have gotten the breakthrough as well on a few occasions. Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu made a brilliant save to deny us the lead as Raphael Varane met the cross.

There were also a few instances where United felt like they should have been given penalties. However, the referee and the VAR did not deem them as such.

The Red Devils showed great strength and resolve to get a point from the match after playing with 10 men for most of the game. Unfortunately, it only brings the teams behind us in the top-four race closer.

After the Liverpool drubbing, we bounced back with the Real Betis result. However, Southampton did not let us build on that momentum. The Old Trafford side will now also be without Casemiro for the next four domestic matches.
